PSYCHOTHERAPY
Psychotherapy is an excellent vehicle in helping individuals, couples and families work through any
problems they are experiencing in their daily lives.
Our experienced and specialized psychologists, while keeping in mind the best interests of the patient,
will work together in a collaborative relationship to help these individuals move on and enjoy a
productive and fulfilling life.
An emphasis is placed on a holistic approach to psychotherapy. We believe in providing care and service
that includes the unique physical, psychological, emotional, and social needs of each client.
We provide psychotherapy in the following areas:
1. Individual
The goal of individual psychotherapy is to help improve the every day functioning of the client. A major focus of psychotherapy involves helping the client to identify and understand his or her difficulties and find effective coping strategies so he or she may reach his or her full potential, achieve more satisfaction, and restore a sense of well-being.
This can be achieved by:
|
| |
- helping the client to skill build
- creating solutions
- making decisions
- developing effective coping strategies for everyday stresses
|
|
2. Couples
Communication and effective problem solving are key solutions to a happy and
successful union. However, when one unit is distressed, it can affect the other partner.
Some
issues one may need to resolve include:
|
| |
- Difficulty talking to people close to you
- Feelings of loneliness, moodiness, depression or anxiety
- Stress due to personal or family illness
- Problems with goal setting and attainment
- Drastic weight fluctuations or irregular eating patterns
- Loss of a significant other in your life
- Work Issues
- Life Transitions
|
|
3. Family
The services of a psychologist assist not only an individual such as a parent or child,
but also the entire family. Again, just as in the situation of couples, when one family member has a problem,
everyone is affected.
Some areas that may cause family stress and conflict stem from common issues with children and
adolescents such as:
|
| |
- Parenting & school problems
- Child and teenage issues
- Self esteem & assertiveness
- Unmanageable anger, hostility or violence
- Divorce / separation
|
|
Therefore, it is helpful for the individual, couple or family to meet and work
together in resolving such troubling issues. Our psychologists will work with the
client or clients to help each individual overcome any difficulties affecting his or her daily life.

PSYCHO-EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS
In order to determine a client's problem in a way that can provide direction for treatment, the
psychologist or psychological associate gathers information through a structured interview, various
tests, and a review of the person's history. The results are then analyzed and a plan for treatment
is prepared. Assessments are used to help the psychologist or psychological associate and client
determine the nature and extent of the client's strengths and level of need, as well as to determine
what the best course of action would be.
Dr. Myrie-Nurse and her professional team provide Psychological and Psycho-Educational assessments
to aid in the identification and/or treatment of learning problems and behavioural, social and emotional issues.
Child, adolescent and adult assessments are available in the following areas:
|
| |
- Learning disabilities
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD
- Giftedness/intellectual development
- Cognitive abilities
- Behavioural problems
- Other common problems such as personality issues
